Getting down onto the floor and back up again is something we did as children, many hundreds of times without noticing. To explore, to play, to read, to learn. It felt good, unencumbered, simple and so easy.

As we move into adulthood, our lifestyle, furniture, all our home appliances etc mean, life rarely asks us to get on to the floor for prolonged periods. So we do it less and less and it leaves our "movement vocabulary."

When we do need to get down towards the floor, to tie shoelaces, pick something up it feels un-natural, clunky, unfamiliar. It feels an effort.
And if you go down you also have to get up.

How many times have you found yourself straining, as you get up, groaning, pulling on a nearby bit of furniture for support, asking for a hand up…? Feeling your creaky sensitive knees, hips and joints as they take the strain, tense and brace. Not surprising that overtime we feel sore, tight and restricted.

These changes do not just happen at the point of pain. The pain is a result of many years of accumulated restriction, tension, and strain.

It is possible to change this vicious cycle.

When we move between levels from standing to sitting, on the floor, to lying on the floor and back up, we involve all of our body. It keeps our joints, bones, muscles, tissues hydrated, vital and strong. So having lots of possible ways to move down and back up is essential for healthy longterm function in life.
