If you’ve been toying with the idea of trying yoga, but something keeps holding you back—whether it is nerves: not knowing what to expect. Or maybe you are wondering if your body is “ready or able”—you’re not alone. Many people hesitate before stepping into their first class.
The good news? You don’t need to be flexible, fit, or even familiar with yoga to start. In fact, your body, just as it is today, is absolutely welcome.
My classes in Forest Row offer a warm, supportive, and inclusive space where all ages, abilities, and bodies are invited. Whether you are completely new or returning after a break, you will find the atmosphere friendly, non-judgmental, and accepting. There is no competition here—no one checking how deep your forward bend is or how long you can hold a pose.
This is yoga for real people, with real lives and real bodies.
What Happens in Your First Yoga Class with Ruth
Walking into the Forest Row yoga space, feels peaceful and welcoming. The room is cosy and intimate, filled with natural light and calm. It is equipped with everything you might need to feel comfortable—mats, bolsters, cushions, and blankets. But more than the physical space, it’s the energy of the room and the community of people that sets the tone.
As the class begins, we take a few moments to check in with each other. It’s a gentle, informal way to connect—not just with the group, but with ourselves. You’re invited to arrive just as you are without putting on a front.
From there, we typically begin lying down, giving our bodies time to settle. This is the beginning of landing back into ourselves, something many of us rarely get the chance to do in our busy daily lives.
From the very first moments, we shift pace. We slow down.
There is no rush, no pressure. The initial movements are soft and deliberate, designed to meet you exactly where you are. We don’t force the body or stretch to its limits. Instead, we begin with what’s easy—what feels good—and build from there. You’ll notice that Ruth encourages each person to stay curious, to explore their body’s natural range without pushing. Signalling to the nervous system that all is well and Breath becomes a guide throughout the session. You will be gently invited to notice the sensation of the breath as it moves through your body, its rhythm, where it flows freely, and where it might feel stuck. This mindful attention helps to quieten mental noise, calm the nervous system, and make space for a different kind of awareness—one that doesn’t demand effort, but invites presence, playfulness and pleasure.
As your attention shifts and you begin to explore moving with ease and curiosity, the body and mind begin to relax. It is common for students to report feeling deeply grounded and soothed, even after their very first class.
This gentle, respectful approach stimulates the nervous system in a way that supports regulation, encouraging balance in both body and mind. Over time, students notice real changes: improved mobility, more comfort in movement, increased strength and stability—and most importantly, a greater sense of ease in themselves.

What to Bring and What to Wear
You don’t need any fancy gear or designer yoga wear to join a class. Just come in clothes that you feel comfortable moving in—sweatpants and a soft t-shirt are perfect. If you already have a yoga mat, you’re welcome to bring it, but there’s no need to rush out and buy one. The Forest Row yoga space is fully equipped with mats, bolsters, cushions, blocks and more to help make your session enjoyable and supportive.
Many people bring a water bottle, and perhaps a cosy layer or socks for the relaxation at the end of class. That’s all you need.
Common Concerns (and Why You Don’t Need to Worry)
Let’s talk about some of the common worries people have before starting yoga. “I’m not flexible enough.” “I won’t be good at it.” “I’m too old.” “I have an injury or condition.” If any of those sound familiar, know this: yoga with Ruth is designed for you—just as you are right now.
This approach is highly respectful and individualised. It meets you exactly where you are, and it’s not about performing perfect postures or pushing your body into shapes. Instead, it’s about gently discovering what’s possible, exploring how your body moves when given space, support, and time. Whether you’re managing chronic pain, recovering from an injury, feeling stiff, or simply curious to feel better in your body, you’re in the right place.
Ruth offers clear guidance that is gentle yet precise. Movements are broken down in a way that feels accessible and intuitive. You’ll be supported in finding your own rhythm, always encouraged to rest when needed. Over time, you may be surprised by how your body responds—becoming stronger, more stable, more mobile—and how your relationship with movement and your own body transforms.
Why Forest Row Is a Beautiful Place to Begin
There’s something special about beginning yoga in Forest Row. The setting itself—quiet, natural, and calming—already invites a sense of spaciousness. But beyond the landscape, it’s the community here that truly makes a difference. The yoga space is small and homely, with a calm, inclusive atmosphere. It’s not a high-pressure fitness studio—it’s more like a peaceful retreat in the heart of your everyday life.
For many students, this environment makes the first step into yoga feel safe and welcoming. You’re not stepping into a room of experts. You’re joining a group of people who are each exploring their own journey, with kindness, curiosity, and compassion.
Whether you’re looking to ease tension, reduce stress, increase your mobility, or simply find a moment of quiet in your week, Ruth’s classes offer a unique invitation to do just that—at your own pace, in your own way.
